Abstract
Peak powers exceeding 1 kw of 5 micron radiation have been obtained from a pulsed chemical laser using CS2/02/He gas mixtures; combustion reactions were initiated by means of a transverse spark discharge system. The maximum pulse energy, 26 millijoules, was reached with a CS2/02/He mixture ratio of 2:25:50; this mixture produced an increase in pulse energy when compared to undiluted mixtures of CS2 and 02. Nitrogen also increased the pulse energy but much less markedly. The pumping reaction is believed to be 0 + CS = CO + S.
