Abstract
A 3.5-s delay igniter was developed for the C1A1 grenade, (hand, smoke, screening) using a commercially available delay column and a 9 mm ammunition primer cap. After being subjected to one of four environmental tests (hot soak at 52C, cold soak at -40C, water immersion or tumbling), 160 grenades containing the new igniter were tested in both hand-thrown and rifle-launched modes. Only four failed to function normally and the fault that caused three of them was corrected during the development. This new igniter functions silently without the hazardous ejection of primer cap components.
