Abstract
The AN/SQS-505 variable depth sonar towing cable has a history of failure including corrosion fatigue, overload, and overload assisted by thinning due to general corrosion. Measures have been taken to eliminate these contributors to failure leaving future failures subject mainly to fatigue. Laboratory and field work has led to an understanding of the cables' AE signature and to the design of a prototype monitor. The monitor is designed to indicate through amplitude level of the AE signature the process of fatigue and an estimate of the number of broken strands.
