Short Wavelength Ultraviolet Absorption Maxima, Both Calculated and Observed, for some Difunctional Conjugated Heteroenoid Compounds

Abstract
Methods developed for calculating the long wavelength ultraviolet absorption maxima of styrenes with terminal gem difunctional groups and of -substituted- and , 4-disubstituted-stilbenes have been successfully applied to the short wavelength maxima of these compounds. Short wavelength conjugative, inductive and steric effects for these functional groups have been related to those for their long wavelength counterparts as have the substituent constants. There is a linear relationship between short- and long- wave-length absorption maxima.
