QUALIFICATION OF NEW BINDER INGREDIENTS IN ALUMINIZED HTPB COMPOSITE PROPELLANTS

Abstract
The report presents the results of a study to find suitable chemicals to replace the R-45M prepolymer and the phenyl-beta-naphthylamine antioxidant in an aluminized hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene composite propellant. The R-45HT prepolymer is an acceptable substitute for R-45M, in combination with selected antioxidants such as di-tert-butylhydroquinone, N-phenyl, N'-(1,3 dimethylbutyl)-p-phenylene diamine and N-phenyl, N'-cyclohexyl-p-phenylene diamine or mixtures of the above chemicals. Many of the aluminized R-45HT propellants developed during the study showed equal or improved processing properties compared to the reference R-45M propellant composition. The R-45HT compositions had similar initial mechanical properties to those of the R-45M propellant but the postcuring problem observed on most of them has not been resolved yet.
