Abstract
Conventional human engineering legibility specifications for alphanumeric symbology displayed on video monitors consist of predictors of user performance derived from legibility research studies. Typical legibility predictors are symbol size, symbol luminance, contrast ratio, font, dot matrix dimensions, and pixel active area. The report discusses a number of significant problems associated with the development and application of conventional legibility specifications.
