Abstract
The rates of acid hydrolysis of a series of N,n-butyl-, and N,i-butyl- and N,t-butyl-benzamides were determined. The locus of prints for the plot of the rate constants for each series of butylbenzamides against Hammett sigma constants approximated a straight line. The mechanism for the hydrolysis of the N,n-butyl-benzamides was the same as that for the N,i-butylbenzamides but differed from that for the N,t-butylbenzamides. The ratio of rate constants for isomeric pairs of ortho and para substituted derivatives within each of the three series proved to be constant.
