Abstract
As one of the six Defence Research Establishments in DND, the Defence and Civil Institute of Environmental Medicine (DCIEM), participates in the research and development required to support the broad operational commitments of the CF. Of the six, DCIEM is unique in a number of ways but the most important one is that all our resources are devoted to the support of the human element -- to enhance his safety and effectiveness in all environments and his effective interface with the machines and equipment required to complete the mission. The work at DCIEM is divided among four of the Technical Programs (TP) of the Chief Research and Development (CRAD) branch: TP14 - Enhancement of Human Performance, TP15 - Man/Machine Systems Effectiveness, TP16 - Operational Medicine and TP17 - Man Underwater. Significant achievements in each of these TPs are summarized in the report.
