Abstract
The report describes the design of a high resolution radar for use in measuring fresh-water ice thickness from a helicopter. Of particular concern is the data acquisition system required to record ice-thickness information at two metre intervals when the aircraft is moving at a speed of about 80 miles/h. The radar difference-frequency signal is sampled, converted to digital form and recorded on computer-compatible magnetic tape along with a time reference. The spectral analysis necessary to extract the depth information is accomplished on the ground by means of a Fast Fourier Transform routine in a digital computer. The equipment was designed for quick installation on a helicopter.
