PROPOSED ACOUSTIC RESEARCH ARRAY WITH SIGNAL DETECTION CAPABILITY

Abstract
A low redundancy array for acoustic research is described. The design was chosen for evaluating the noise field for d/lamda values from 0.1 to 1.0 at 100 Hz. The array's potential for signal detection is evaluated. A comparison of the directivity index, beam pattern and sensitivity to white noise of the proposed low redundancy array with an equispaced array is made. The low redundancy array proved more sensitive than the equispaced array to white noise at a level that is probably acceptable in view of the research potential of the low redundancy array. It is suggested that the low redundancy array is appropriate from measuring the cross spectral matrix of signal and noise; cross spectral data should be collected over several years to provide a representative sample.
