COMPUTER SIMULATION AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES OF THE PERFORMANCE OF A 2phi-DPSK MODEM OVER A SATELLITE CHANNEL

Abstract
A comparison between experimental and calculated performance in terms of probability of error of a 2phi-DPSK over a nonlinear satellite channel is described in the paper. The channel nonlinearity is a travelling-wave tube (TWT) operated near or at saturation. The TWT is modeled by a single frequency-dependent nonlinearity whose parameters are based on results from measurement. In addition, measured frequency responses of the transmit and receive filters are used in the simulation. The results obtained in the study show that the measured and simulated values agree very well in the region of normal operation and thus indicate that the simulation technique is useful in practical situations.
