Abstract
The atmospheric considerations pertinent to active viewing systems using supplementary radiant energy of wavelengths aroud 10 microns are analysed. The limitations imposed upon these systems by atmospheric extinction under various weather conditions are considered. An analysis of the effects of backscattering on both CW and range gated pulsed systems is given.
