Abstract
The merits and limitations of a manual plate penetrometer as a device for index of strength measurement in shallow snow and prediction of tracked vehicle performance are discussed. Emphasis is given to the statistical handling of penetrometer data to aid in making an assessment of the device. The plate penetrometer has limited accuracy for profiling the strength of shallow snow containing strong crusts and may be better applied to semi-infinite snow depths.
