SHIPMO3: IMPROVED VISCOUS ROLL DAMPING PREDICTIONS FOR THE SHIPMO COMPUTER PROGRAM

Abstract
An improved viscous roll damping model for ship motion programs is described. The improvements in roll predictions are most significant when viscous roll damping is large; viscous effects are most important at low speed (Fn less than or equal to approximate 0.2) and for full hull forms. The updated DREA program, which incorporates the improved algorithms, has been designated SHIPMO3. A comparison between the roll damping predictions of SHIPMO3 and the results of model tests is presented. The SHIPMO3 predictions are fair to good. The new roll damping model is applicable to both warships and merchant vessels; however, the method used to predict the viscous roll damping is empirical, and thus potentially limited to hulls within the range of the data base.
