SIMULTANEOUS ELECTROCHEMICAL AND ELECTRON SPIN RESONANCE STUDIES OF THE KINETICS OF THE ELECTROREDUCTION OF SULFUR DIOXIDE IN NONAQUEOUS MEDIA

Abstract
The kinetics of the reaction SO2(-) with SO2 to form the free radical complex S204(-) has been studied in solutions of tetraethylammonium perchlorate in N,N-dimethylformamide with simultaneous electrochemical-electron spin resonsance techniques. The results confirm the 1:1 stoichiometry of the free-radical complex and suggest that this complex is a weakly bound charge-transfer complex of SO2 and SO2(-). Computer fitting of the transient concentrations of SO2(-) measured with ESR during and following a constant current pulse allows a value of E5 cubic dm 3 mol 1(-) S 1(-) to be determined for the foward rate constant k2 super f for the complex formation reaction.
