DETERMINATION OF PGDN IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION

Abstract
A procedure is described for the detection and quantitation of 1,2-propylene glycol dinitrate (PGDN), the monopropellant in Otto fuel 11, in aqueous solution down to the part per million (ppm) level. High Performance Liquid Chromatographic (HPLC) separation and ultraviolet (uv) detection of PGDN are utilized. The method developed is applied to evaluate the efficiency of organic solvent extractions of PGDN from waste water solutions generated at CFAD Bedford during maintenance of the MK37 and MK44 torpedoes. The results indicate that less than 1 ppm PGDN remains in solution following the extraction.
