DEVELOPMENT AND FABRICATION OF A 60 HZ DEUTERIUM FLUORIDE LASER TRANSMITTER

Abstract
This laser was optimized and designed primarily for laser range finding and tracking applications. It was based on work previously done under DSS Contract Serial Number 8SR79-00-37, and it incorporates many improvements over the previous laser system. In particular, the laser produces high peak power (>1 MW), short duration (<0.1 mu s) pulses at high repetition rate, 60 Hz with a duty cycle of 0.4. The laser has an automatic gas mix control which keeps the gas ratios at the correct value independent of repetition rate, has easily changeable gas scrubber and sulfur precipitator, and the optical cavity is mounted independently of the discharge volume. The laser is in a self-contained package, which is based on one of Lumonics commercial lasers, the HyperEX-400 Series laser.
